
Fiep did a large number of illustrations for this collection of verse by Annie M.G. Schmidt.
As the book was to be published in black and white, she made pencil drawings.
‘Annie was always very critical and alert,’ said Fiep. ‘For the poem De koning gaat verhuizen
I had made a lovely drawing with lots of nice mess. Annie looked at it through a magnifying glass and suddenly said, “Fiepie, that fish tank with the two goldfish can be crooked, but the water can’t possibly be crooked. Water is water!” I’ve always remembered that. Now, if I’m about to make a mistake, I think, oh yes, watch out, water is water’.
