The whole of The Netherlands was in shock when Fiep Westendorp passed away on February 3rd 2004. Every newspaper had one of Fiep’s illustrations on their front page and ran headlines such as ‘Jip and Janneke now orphaned for sure’.
Fiep would have most certainly been pleased with this public appreciation of her work and it remains a pity that she did not enjoy the deserved credit in her own lifetime.
Happily she was present for the complete works exhibition in the Kunsthal in Rotterdam simultaneous with the publication of the book ‘Signed: Fiep Westendorp’ and was able to view the documentary broadcast by AVRO on the 1st and 2nd of January.
Fiep left her estate and the rights to her work to the Fiep Westendorp Foundation. In addition she entrusted to Gioia Smid the task of managing her work in a spirit in keeping with her own.
She granted exclusive rights for the exploitation of her work, merchandising, books, etc., to Illustre Ltd. (since January 1, 2009 registered as Fiep Amsterdam Ltd.).
Fiep was by and large responsible for setting the aims of the Fiep Westendorp Foundation. For more information about the work carried out by the Fiep Westendorp Foundation check out Fiep Westendorp Foundation.
